Formula and method for Circumference to Diameter
The circumference of a circle is the distance around its outer edge. For every circle, no matter how large or small, that distance is always the same multiple of the diameter — roughly 3.14159 times — and that constant is called pi (π). Rearranging the definition of π gives the formula this calculator uses: diameter = circumference ÷ π.
How the calculation works
Pi is defined as C ÷ d for every circle, so dividing a measured circumference by π isolates the diameter directly. This calculator takes your circumference, divides it by π using full floating-point precision (not the rounded 3.14), and also reports the radius (half the diameter), the area (π × radius²), and the diameter re-expressed in a second common unit so you have the full set of core circle measurements from a single input.
Common mistakes
- Confusing diameter and radius: the radius is half the diameter, not the same value. Doubling a radius by mistake, or halving a diameter by mistake, is the most common circle error.
- Mixing units: the diameter comes out in the same unit as the circumference you entered. Convert everything to one unit first, or use the unit selector to keep track.
- Rounding pi too early: using 3.14 instead of a full-precision π introduces small errors that compound in follow-on calculations like area. This calculator uses full-precision π internally.
