About the Rate Pressure Product
The Rate Pressure Product (RPP), also known as the double product, is a simple, widely used estimate of myocardial oxygen demand and cardiac workload. It is calculated as heart rate in beats per minute multiplied by systolic blood pressure in mmHg: RPP = HR x SBP. Because both heart rate and blood pressure rise with exertion, RPP is commonly tracked during exercise stress testing and cardiac rehabilitation to gauge how hard the heart is working at a given moment.
How the calculation works
Enter the heart rate and systolic blood pressure at the point you want to evaluate (for example, at peak exercise or at rest), along with a resting heart rate and resting systolic blood pressure for comparison. The calculator multiplies each pair to get the current and resting Rate Pressure Product, then reports the percent increase from rest to the measured point.
Interpreting values
- Resting RPP in healthy adults is typically around 6,000 to 10,000 (beats/min x mmHg).
- RPP rises predictably with exercise intensity; values above roughly 20,000 to 30,000 indicate a high cardiac workload similar to vigorous exertion.
- The exact RPP at which symptoms or ischemia appear (the "ischemic threshold") is specific to each patient and is established through monitored exercise testing, not from this calculator.
When to consult a professional
This tool performs only the RPP arithmetic. It does not diagnose angina, ischemia, or any cardiac condition, and it should not be used to adjust medication or exercise intensity on your own. Any interpretation of RPP values, especially near a suspected ischemic threshold, should involve a qualified clinician.
