About the Baby Eye Color Calculator
This calculator estimates the chance that a baby will have brown, green, or blue eyes based on both parents' eye colors. It uses a simplified two-gene inheritance model — the version commonly taught in introductory genetics — where each parent contributes alleles that make brown (dominant), green (intermediate), or blue (recessive) more or less likely in the child.
How it works
Select each parent's eye color from brown, green, or blue. The tool matches that pair to a commonly published probability table and returns the estimated percentage chance of a brown-, green-, or blue-eyed child, then highlights the most likely outcome. The order of the parents does not matter — a brown-and-blue pairing gives the same result either way.
- Brown is dominant: if either parent has brown eyes, brown is usually the single most likely outcome.
- Blue is recessive: two blue-eyed parents are very likely (about 99%) to have a blue-eyed child under this model.
- Green sits in between: it appears most often when at least one parent carries green.
Important limits
Human eye color is polygenic — influenced by at least a dozen genes — so a two-gene model can only approximate real inheritance. The percentages here are population estimates, not predictions for your specific child, and they cannot account for rare combinations or a grandparent's contribution. A baby's eyes also frequently change color during the first year as melanin develops in the iris.
