How the Popcorn Calculator works
Popcorn planning comes down to one dependable ratio: unpopped kernels expand to roughly 2 cups of popped popcorn per tablespoon of kernels. That means 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of kernels yields about 8 cups popped. This calculator starts from how many people you're feeding and how much each person eats, works backward to the popped volume you need, and then converts that into the exact kernels — and, for stovetop popping, the oil — to measure out before you start.
The formula
- Popped cups needed = servings × popped cups per serving
- Kernels (tablespoons) = popped cups ÷ 2 (because 1 tbsp kernels → 2 cups popped)
- Kernels (cups) = kernel tablespoons ÷ 16 (16 tbsp = 1 cup)
- Oil (tablespoons) = kernel cups × 8 (2 tbsp oil per 1/4 cup kernels)
Example: for 6 people at 2 cups each you need 12 cups popped, which is 6 tablespoons (about 3/8 cup) of kernels and roughly 3 tablespoons of oil on the stovetop.

Popping methods and yield
Air poppers use no oil and give the leanest popcorn — add butter or a light oil spritz afterward if you want seasoning to stick. Stovetop popping needs just enough oil to coat the pan bottom (the 2 tbsp per 1/4 cup ratio above) and produces a richer result. Microwave loose kernels in a covered bowl behave like air popping. Whichever method you use, the kernel-to-popped ratio stays close to 2 cups per tablespoon; fresh kernels pop more fully, while old or dried-out kernels leave more "old maids" (unpopped duds) and yield slightly less.
