How the Perfect Pancake Calculator works
This calculator starts from one reliable base recipe and scales it to whatever batch you need. The base recipe makes twelve 4-inch pancakes and uses 1.5 cups all-purpose flour, 1.25 cups milk, 1 large egg, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and 3 tablespoons of melted butter. Every ingredient scales linearly with the amount of batter you need, so making 24 pancakes doubles each quantity and making 6 pancakes halves it.
The scaling formula
Two things change how much batter you need: how many pancakes you want and how big each one is. Batter volume grows with a pancake's area, and area grows with the square of the diameter. So the scale factor is:
scale = (pancakes wanted ÷ 12) × (diameter ÷ 4)²
For example, twelve 4-inch pancakes give a scale of 1.0 (the base recipe). Twenty-four 4-inch pancakes give 2.0. Twelve 6-inch pancakes give 1.0 × (6/4)² = 2.25, because a 6-inch pancake covers 2.25× the area of a 4-inch one. Each ingredient is then multiplied by that scale factor. Eggs are rounded to whole eggs since you cannot easily measure a fraction of one.
Why measure by weight for flour
Flour is the one ingredient where volume betrays you. A cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 125 g when spooned and leveled, but 150–160 g when scooped straight from the bag and packed down — a 20–30% difference that makes pancakes dense and dry. The calculator shows grams alongside cups so you can weigh flour on a scale for repeatable results. Liquids, sugar, and leavening are far more forgiving by volume.
