How the beer pong planner works

Beer pong is played on a long table with two triangle racks of cups facing each other. The classic rack is a 10-cup pyramid (rows of 4, 3, 2, 1) on each end, so a single game uses 20 cups per table. This planner takes your number of tables, cups per side, how much beer goes in each cup, a spare-cup margin, your guest count, and your can or bottle size, then works out exactly what to buy.

The formulas

  • Game cups = tables × 2 × cups-per-side. With 2 tables and a 10-cup rack that is 2 × 2 × 10 = 40 cups.
  • Total cups to buy = game cups × (1 + spare% / 100), rounded up. A 25% margin on 40 cups gives 50 cups to cover re-racks, drops, and drinking cups.
  • Ping pong balls = tables × 2, plus the same spare margin. Each game needs 2 balls; balls get lost or land on the floor, so buy extras.
  • Beer needed (oz) = game cups × oz-per-cup. Filling 40 cups to 2 oz each needs 80 oz of beer.
  • Cans / bottles = beer-oz ÷ can-size, rounded up. 80 oz ÷ 12 oz = 6.67, so buy 7 cans.

Why cups are not filled to the brim

Under most house rules you do not fill each cup — a shared pour of about 2 oz (roughly 60 mL) per cup is standard so the game stays social rather than a race to blackout. At 2 oz per cup, one 12 oz can fills six cups, and a full 10-cup side uses about 20 oz — a little under two cans. If your crowd fills cups fully (a US Solo cup holds ~16 oz to the rim, ~12 oz to the top line), raise the "beer per cup" input and the beer total climbs fast.

Do both sides share one rack of cups?
No. Each end of the table has its own rack, so a "10-cup" game actually sets out 20 cups. That is why the formula multiplies cups-per-side by 2 before multiplying by the number of tables.
