Third Stimulus Check Calculator - American Rescue Plan

Estimate your third Economic Impact Payment under the American Rescue Plan Act. Enter your filing status, adjusted gross income (AGI), and number of dependents to see the maximum payment, how much the AGI phase-out reduces it, and your estimated total.

Quick Facts

Payment amount
$1,400 per person, any age
Unlike the first two rounds, EIP3 paid $1,400 for every dependent regardless of age, not just qualifying children under 17.
Phase-out formula
Payment × (ceiling − AGI) ÷ (ceiling − floor)
Reaches exactly $0 at a fixed AGI ceiling for your filing status, unlike the flat 5%-per-$100 reduction used in rounds one and two.

How the Third Stimulus Check Calculator works

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 authorized a third round of Economic Impact Payments (EIP3): $1,400 per eligible individual, plus $1,400 for every dependent claimed on the return, with no age limit on dependents. The full amount is only paid below an adjusted gross income (AGI) floor; above that floor it phases out on a straight line until it hits exactly $0 at a fixed AGI ceiling that depends on filing status.

The formula

Let base be $1,400 for single or married-filing-separately filers, or $2,800 for married filing jointly, and let dependents be the number of dependents claimed. The maximum payment is:

Max payment = base + ($1,400 × dependents)

The AGI floor and ceiling depend on filing status:

  • Single / married filing separately: floor $75,000, ceiling $80,000
  • Head of household: floor $112,500, ceiling $120,000
  • Married filing jointly: floor $150,000, ceiling $160,000

If AGI is at or below the floor, you receive the full maximum payment. If AGI is at or above the ceiling, the payment is $0. In between, the payment phases out proportionally:

Payment = Max payment × (ceiling − AGI) ÷ (ceiling − floor)

Worked example

A head-of-household filer with $116,000 AGI and 2 dependents has a maximum payment of $1,400 + ($1,400 × 2) = $4,200. Their AGI sits 3/4 of the way through the $112,500–$120,000 phase-out band, so they receive roughly $4,200 × (120,000 − 116,000) ÷ (120,000 − 112,500) = $4,200 × (4,000 ÷ 7,500) ≈ $2,240, a reduction of about $1,960 from the maximum.

How EIP3 differs from the first two stimulus checks

Two design changes distinguish the third payment from the CARES Act and December 2020 rounds. First, dependents of any age counted for the full $1,400 — adult dependents, college students, and elderly relatives claimed as dependents were included, where earlier rounds paid only for qualifying children under 17. Second, the phase-out mechanics changed: rounds one and two reduced the payment by a flat 5% of AGI over the threshold ($5 per $100), so the phase-out band widened automatically for larger families. EIP3 instead phases to zero at a fixed AGI ceiling no matter how many dependents are claimed, so a larger family's payment falls faster per dollar of AGI within that same fixed band.

Limits of this calculator

This tool estimates the statutory payment amount using the AGI, filing status, and dependent count you enter. It does not check Social Security number requirements, immigration status rules, or offsets such as past-due child support. If you believe you did not receive the full amount you were owed, the actual reconciliation happens through the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return, based on your final 2021 AGI.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the third stimulus check (EIP3) calculated?
The American Rescue Plan Act paid $1,400 for each eligible individual (single filers and heads of household) or $2,800 for married couples filing jointly, plus $1,400 for every dependent claimed, regardless of the dependent's age. That maximum amount is reduced on a straight-line basis once adjusted gross income (AGI) exceeds a floor, reaching exactly $0 at a fixed ceiling.
What are the AGI phase-out thresholds?
Single filers phase out between $75,000 and $80,000 AGI, head of household filers between $112,500 and $120,000, and married couples filing jointly between $150,000 and $160,000. Payment equals the maximum amount times (ceiling minus AGI) divided by (ceiling minus floor), floored at zero.
How is EIP3 different from the first two stimulus checks?
Two things changed. First, dependents of any age (not just qualifying children under 17) counted for the full $1,400, so adult dependents and college students were included for the first time. Second, the phase-out reaches zero at a fixed AGI ceiling regardless of family size, instead of the flat 5% reduction per $100 over the threshold used in rounds one and two, so larger households phase out faster per dollar of AGI within the same income band.
Does this replace the IRS Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet?
No. This tool estimates the third Economic Impact Payment amount using the same formula the IRS applied. If you never received your full third stimulus payment, the actual reconciliation happens through the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return, which uses your final 2021 AGI rather than an estimate.
