How to Calculate Your Cross Stitch Project Cost
Cross stitch is a deeply satisfying craft, but the costs can add up quickly once you account for every material involved. This calculator breaks your project into five cost categories — aida cloth, embroidery floss, needles and hoop, framing, and your time — so you know exactly what a finished piece is worth before you even thread your needle.
Aida Cloth
Aida cloth is the woven fabric counted in "count" per inch — the higher the count, the finer the stitches. A small 14-count piece for a 5 x 7 design might cost $3–$8, while a large 18-count linen evenweave for a full-coverage sampler can run $20–$40.
Embroidery Floss
DMC or Anchor skeins typically cost $0.60–$1.00 each, but a complex pattern with 30–50 colors can easily require $30–$50 in floss alone. Count the number of unique DMC colors in your pattern and estimate one to two skeins per color for small projects.
Framing and Finishing
Framing is often the biggest hidden expense. A standard frame from a craft store runs $15–$40, while custom framing from a professional frame shop can cost $80–$200 or more depending on mat board, glass type, and frame dimensions.
