Hand dryers vs. paper towels: the real formula

This calculator compares two ways of drying your hands after washing them: an electric hand dryer versus single-use paper towels. It converts each option into the same unit — kilograms of CO2 emitted per dry — so you can compare them directly. The math has two halves:

Hand dryer energy and emissions: Energy per dry (kWh) = power draw (kW) x drying time (hours). CO2 per dry (kg) = energy per dry (kWh) x the electricity grid's emissions factor (kg CO2 per kWh). For example, a dryer rated at 2.3 kW that runs for 30 seconds (30/3600 = 0.00833 hours) uses 2.3 x 0.00833 ≈ 0.0192 kWh per dry. At a US-average grid factor of about 0.4 kg CO2/kWh, that's roughly 0.0077 kg (7.7 grams) of CO2 per dry.

Paper towel emissions: CO2 per dry (kg) = number of sheets used per dry x the CO2 footprint per sheet. Most people use one or two folded paper towels per dry. Life-cycle assessments of tissue/towel paper (accounting for pulping, manufacturing, and disposal) commonly put the footprint of a single conventional paper towel sheet in the range of about 0.008–0.015 kg CO2e; this calculator defaults to 0.011 kg CO2e per sheet. Two sheets at that rate is about 0.022 kg CO2 per dry — roughly triple the dryer's emissions in this example.

Why the comparison isn't fixed

The "winner" depends heavily on three variables you control in this calculator: (1) the dryer's power and speed — a modern high-speed jet-air dryer (around 1.6 kW for 10-12 seconds) uses far less energy than an older warm-air dryer (around 2.3 kW for 30-40 seconds); (2) how many paper towel sheets a person actually uses per dry (often 2, sometimes more); and (3) the local electricity grid's carbon intensity, which varies enormously — from near zero in a hydro- or nuclear-heavy grid to over 0.7 kg CO2/kWh in a coal-heavy grid. A high-speed dryer on a clean grid will almost always beat paper towels; a slow dryer on a coal-heavy grid may not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hand dryers really better for the environment than paper towels?
It depends on the dryer speed and the local power grid. Fast, high-speed dryers (jet-air/Airblade-style) typically use only 0.005–0.008 kWh per dry, giving them a lower footprint than paper towels in most grids. Slower, older warm-air dryers use 2-4x more energy per dry and can come out even with — or worse than — paper towels, especially where electricity is generated mostly from coal.
