About the CO₂ Breathing Emission Calculator
Every time you breathe out, you release carbon dioxide that your body produced as a byproduct of metabolizing food for energy. This calculator estimates the mass of CO₂ a person exhales over a given number of days, using widely cited physiological respiration data. It's a simple multiplication: people × days × CO₂ output rate per person per day.
The formula
Total CO₂ (kg) = Number of people × Number of days × CO₂ rate (kg/person/day)
The rate depends on activity level, since CO₂ output tracks metabolic rate (and therefore oxygen consumption and calorie burn):
- Resting or sleeping: roughly 0.68 kg CO₂ per person per day. At rest, an adult produces CO₂ at about 200 mL per minute, corresponding to a resting metabolic rate near 1 MET.
- Average daily activity (mixed rest, walking, light activity): commonly cited as approximately 1.0 kg CO₂ per person per day — the figure most often quoted for an average adult's daily respiration footprint.
- Active / exercising for extended periods: can rise to roughly 1.9 kg CO₂ per person per day or more, since exercise can raise metabolic rate and CO₂ output several-fold above resting levels.
Where the numbers come from
Human respiration rate at rest is about 12-20 breaths per minute, moving roughly 6-8 liters of air per minute. Exhaled air is about 4-5% CO₂ by volume (versus about 0.04% in ambient air), while inhaled air is about 21% oxygen and exhaled air is about 16% oxygen. Multiplying typical exhaled airflow by that CO₂ concentration, and converting from volume to mass using the density of CO₂ (~1.98 g/L at standard conditions), gives the commonly cited range of roughly 0.5-1 kg of CO₂ per person per day at rest, rising with physical activity. Public health and climate-education sources frequently round this to "about 1 kg of CO₂ per person per day" for an average mix of activity.
Why this number doesn't count toward your carbon footprint
An important nuance: the CO₂ you exhale is not counted in personal or national carbon footprint accounting. That carbon came from food you recently ate, which came from plants that pulled the same CO₂ out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis. Human (and animal) respiration is part of the short-term biological carbon cycle — it's carbon-neutral over the cycle of growing, eating, and breathing. This is different from burning fossil fuels, which releases carbon that has been locked away for millions of years and adds new CO₂ to the atmosphere that wouldn't otherwise be there. This calculator is useful for understanding physiology, indoor air quality (e.g., CO₂ buildup in poorly ventilated rooms), and general curiosity — not for offsetting or footprint calculations.
