About the Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator
Chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains theobromine, a caffeine-like stimulant (a methylxanthine) that dogs metabolize far more slowly than humans do. This calculator estimates the theobromine dose your dog ingested per kilogram of body weight and compares it against the doses at which mild, serious, and severe signs typically appear. Chocolate also contains a smaller amount of caffeine, which adds to the effect, but theobromine is the primary concern and the value clinicians use for dosing.
The formula
The dose that matters is theobromine per unit of body weight, not the raw weight of chocolate:
Dose (mg/kg) = (ounces eaten × theobromine mg per ounce) ÷ body weight in kg
Body weight in pounds is converted to kilograms by dividing by 2.2046 (1 lb = 0.4536 kg). The theobromine content depends heavily on the type of chocolate, which is why a small piece of baking chocolate can be more dangerous than a whole milk-chocolate bar.
Theobromine content by chocolate type
- White chocolate: ~0.25 mg/oz — essentially no theobromine (the fat and sugar carry other risks like pancreatitis, but not methylxanthine poisoning).
- Milk chocolate: ~64 mg/oz.
- Dark / semisweet chocolate: ~150 mg/oz.
- Unsweetened / baking chocolate: ~450 mg/oz.
- Dry cocoa powder: ~737 mg/oz — the most concentrated common source.
Toxicity thresholds
Published veterinary references use approximate theobromine doses per kilogram of body weight:
- Under ~20 mg/kg: signs are unlikely, though mild GI upset can occur.
- ~20 mg/kg: mild signs — vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased thirst and urination.
- ~40–50 mg/kg: cardiac signs such as a racing or irregular heartbeat.
- ~60 mg/kg and above: severe signs including tremors and seizures; the reported lethal dose is roughly 100–200 mg/kg.
Worked example
A 20 lb (9.07 kg) dog eats 4 oz of milk chocolate. Total theobromine = 4 × 64 = 256 mg. Dose = 256 ÷ 9.07 ≈ 28 mg/kg, which lands in the mild-signs range. The same dog eating just 1 oz of baking chocolate would ingest 450 mg → 450 ÷ 9.07 ≈ 50 mg/kg, a serious dose from a much smaller amount.
