Formula and Method for Gold Weight
Karat gold jewelry and bullion are rarely pure. Pure gold — 24 karat — is soft, so jewelers alloy it with metals like silver, copper, zinc, or palladium to add strength, adjust color, and lower cost. The karat number tells you what fraction of the total mass is actual gold, out of 24 parts: Pure gold weight = Total weight × (Karat ÷ 24). This calculator applies that ratio using the standard fineness values published for each karat grade, then converts the result to grams, troy ounces, and an estimated melt value at the gold price you enter.
How the calculation works
Enter the total weight of the item exactly as measured (on a scale), choose the unit you measured it in, and select its karat stamp. The calculator first converts your weight to grams, then multiplies by the karat's standard fineness — for example 14K = 0.585, meaning 58.5% of the mass is pure gold — to get the pure gold content in grams. It divides that by 31.1034768 (the number of grams in one troy ounce, the unit precious metals are priced in) to get troy ounces, and if you enter a gold price per troy ounce, multiplies the pure gold troy-ounce weight by that price to estimate melt value.
Common mistakes
- Confusing karat with carat: karat (K) measures gold purity out of 24; carat (ct) measures gemstone weight (200 mg each) — they are unrelated units that just sound alike.
- Using total weight as gold weight: a 10-gram 14K ring does not contain 10 grams of gold — it contains 10 × 0.585 = 5.85 grams of pure gold; the rest is alloy metal.
- Ignoring stone or setting weight: gemstones, pearls, and non-gold clasps add weight that is not gold — for an accurate result, weigh only the metal, or subtract known stone weights first.
- Mixing up troy and standard ounces: precious metals are priced per troy ounce (31.1035 g), which is about 10% heavier than the standard avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) used for food and most other goods.
