Gold Weight Calculator

Find the pure gold content and estimated melt value of jewelry or bullion from its total weight and karat purity, using the standard 24-karat fineness scale.

Quick Facts

Karat fineness scale
24K = 99.9% pure
Pure gold is 24 parts out of 24; other karats are alloyed with metals like silver, copper, or zinc.
Purity formula
Pure weight = Total weight × (Karat ÷ 24)
The fraction of actual gold by mass in a karat-marked item.
Troy ounce conversion
1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g
Gold and other precious metals are priced by the troy ounce, not the standard avoirdupois ounce.

Formula and Method for Gold Weight

Karat gold jewelry and bullion are rarely pure. Pure gold — 24 karat — is soft, so jewelers alloy it with metals like silver, copper, zinc, or palladium to add strength, adjust color, and lower cost. The karat number tells you what fraction of the total mass is actual gold, out of 24 parts: Pure gold weight = Total weight × (Karat ÷ 24). This calculator applies that ratio using the standard fineness values published for each karat grade, then converts the result to grams, troy ounces, and an estimated melt value at the gold price you enter.

How the calculation works

Enter the total weight of the item exactly as measured (on a scale), choose the unit you measured it in, and select its karat stamp. The calculator first converts your weight to grams, then multiplies by the karat's standard fineness — for example 14K = 0.585, meaning 58.5% of the mass is pure gold — to get the pure gold content in grams. It divides that by 31.1034768 (the number of grams in one troy ounce, the unit precious metals are priced in) to get troy ounces, and if you enter a gold price per troy ounce, multiplies the pure gold troy-ounce weight by that price to estimate melt value.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing karat with carat: karat (K) measures gold purity out of 24; carat (ct) measures gemstone weight (200 mg each) — they are unrelated units that just sound alike.
  • Using total weight as gold weight: a 10-gram 14K ring does not contain 10 grams of gold — it contains 10 × 0.585 = 5.85 grams of pure gold; the rest is alloy metal.
  • Ignoring stone or setting weight: gemstones, pearls, and non-gold clasps add weight that is not gold — for an accurate result, weigh only the metal, or subtract known stone weights first.
  • Mixing up troy and standard ounces: precious metals are priced per troy ounce (31.1035 g), which is about 10% heavier than the standard avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) used for food and most other goods.

Real-world applications

  • Buying or selling scrap gold and jewelry, where dealers pay based on pure gold content, not total item weight.
  • Estimating bullion coin or bar value, most of which are 22K or 24K, against the daily spot price.
  • Appraisals and insurance valuations, where the metal's fine weight is one input into replacement cost.
  • Casting and jewelry design, where karat and mass determine how much fine gold and alloy metal to combine in a melt.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the pure gold weight from karat?
Multiply the total weight by the karat's fineness fraction (karat ÷ 24). For example, 10 grams of 14K gold contains 10 × 0.585 = 5.85 grams of pure gold, since 14K gold is 58.5% pure on the standard karat scale.
What is the fineness of common gold karats?
On the standard 24-karat scale: 24K = 99.9% pure, 22K = 91.6%, 21K = 87.5%, 18K = 75.0%, 14K = 58.5%, 12K = 50.0%, 10K = 41.7%, and 9K = 37.5%. These are the standard minimum fineness values used in jewelry hallmarking.
How is melt value calculated?
Melt value = pure gold weight (in troy ounces) × the current gold spot price per troy ounce. This calculator converts your total weight to pure gold content, converts that to troy ounces (1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g), then multiplies by the price you enter.
Why is karat gold weight less than the total item weight?
Karat gold jewelry is an alloy — pure 24K gold is mixed with metals such as silver, copper, or zinc to add strength and change color. The karat number tells you what fraction of the total weight is actual gold; the rest is the alloying metal.
