About the Cross-stitch Calculator
This tool tells you how large a piece of fabric to cut for a cross-stitch project. Enter the design's width and height in stitches, pick the fabric count you're stitching on, and add a margin for hooping or framing — the calculator converts your stitch count into inches (and centimeters) of fabric using the standard cross-stitch sizing formula.
The formula
- Finished design size (inches) = stitches ÷ fabric count. A 100-stitch-wide design on 14-count Aida measures 100 ÷ 14 = 7.1 inches wide.
- Fabric size to cut (inches) = finished design size + (margin × 2), since the margin is added to both sides of each dimension.
- Fabric count is the number of stitches per inch. For evenweave or linen stitched over two threads, the effective count is half the printed thread count (a 28-count worked over two behaves like 14-count).
Practical context
This calculator sizes the fabric only — it does not estimate floss quantities, thread colors, or stitching time, since those depend on the specific pattern and thread coverage. A 3 to 4 inch margin per side is a common starting point, but increase it if you plan to use stretcher bars, a scroll frame, or want extra fabric for professional framing.
