Understanding the Business Days Calculator

This tool counts the number of business days between two dates. A business day is any weekday - Monday through Friday - and the calculator automatically removes Saturdays and Sundays from the span. If you also enter the number of holidays that fall within the range, those are subtracted too, leaving the net number of working days between your start and end date.

The formula

The calculation happens in three steps:

  • Calendar days: the total number of days from the start date to the end date, counting both endpoints (end date minus start date, plus one).
  • Weekdays: the calendar days that fall on Monday through Friday, found by checking the day of the week for every date in the range and excluding Saturday and Sunday.
  • Business days: weekdays minus the number of holidays you enter, giving the net count of working days: Business days = Weekdays − Holidays.

The calculator also reports the business-day total as full weeks plus leftover days (dividing by 5, since a standard work week has five business days), so a count like 17 business days becomes "3 weeks, 2 days" at a glance.

Worked example

Suppose the start date is a Monday and the end date is the Friday two and a half weeks later. That span covers 19 calendar days, made up of 15 weekdays and 4 weekend days. If one public holiday falls inside that range, the net result is 15 − 1 = 14 business days, which the calculator reports as 2 weeks, 4 days.

Common uses

  • Estimating delivery or shipping dates quoted in business days rather than calendar days.
  • Tracking contract, notice, or review periods defined in working days (for example, "10 business days to respond").
  • Planning project timelines and payroll or invoice due dates that skip weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate business days between two dates?
Count every calendar day from the start date to the end date, inclusive, then remove Saturdays and Sundays. What remains is the weekday count. Subtract any holidays that fall inside the range to get the net number of business days.
Does this calculator account for holidays?
Yes, but you enter the holiday count yourself. The calculator does not know regional holiday calendars, so check your own calendar for holidays that fall between the start and end dates and enter that number in the Holidays field.
Are Saturday and Sunday always excluded?
By default, yes - this calculator assumes the standard Monday-to-Friday business week used in the United States and most of Europe. Some countries or industries use a different weekend, such as Friday-Saturday, which this tool does not model.
Is the start date included in the count?
Yes. Both the start date and the end date are counted if they fall on a weekday, matching the common convention used for deadlines and billing cycles. If the start date is a Saturday or Sunday, it does not add to the business day total.
