About the Birth Control Cost Calculator
This calculator estimates what a birth control method actually costs you over time by combining its recurring price with any one-time upfront charge. It multiplies the cost per refill by how many refills you buy per year, extends that across your chosen time horizon, adds the upfront cost, and reports the total plus the average yearly and monthly spend.
The formula
The math is straightforward arithmetic:
- Recurring cost per year = cost per refill x refills per year.
- Total cost = upfront cost + (recurring cost per year x number of years).
- Average cost per year = total cost / number of years.
- Average cost per month = average cost per year / 12.
Spreading the one-time upfront cost across the whole horizon is what makes methods comparable. A method with a high upfront charge but no monthly cost can work out cheaper per month than a low-priced monthly method once you look at it over several years.
Choosing your inputs
- Cost per refill - the price you actually pay each time (your copay or the cash price for a pack of pills, a box of condoms, a ring, or a shot).
- Refills per year - how many times you pay in a year: 12 for a monthly pack, 4 for a quarterly shot, 1 for an annual supply.
- Upfront cost - one-time charges such as an office visit, an exam, or a device and its insertion (for example an IUD or implant). Enter 0 if there is none.
- Time horizon - how many years to evaluate. Match it to how long you expect to use the method, or to a device's lifespan, so front-loaded and pay-as-you-go options compare fairly.
What the numbers do and do not include
The result is a cost estimate only. It reflects the prices you enter and does not account for insurance changes, manufacturer coupons, sales tax, or how effective or medically suitable a method is for you. Cost is one factor among several; effectiveness, side effects, and fit for your health are separate questions.
When to consult a professional
Use these figures for budgeting and comparison, not as medical guidance. For help choosing a method that suits your health, and for accurate pricing under your insurance, talk with a licensed healthcare provider or pharmacist.
