Why outside lanes start ahead, how 200m and 400m tracks differ, and when a stagger estimate is good enough.
The curve creates the stagger
Each lane farther from the inside has a larger curve radius. The start line moves forward so every runner covers the same race distance.
Indoor and outdoor tracks differ
A 200m indoor track has tighter curves and often narrower lanes, so the stagger per lane is not the same as an outdoor 400m oval.
Use official marks for meets
For sanctioned competition, use painted track markings. For practice setup, pacing drills, and informal races, a calculator estimate is usually enough.
The fastest way to make a calculator page useful is to show when the number is reliable, when it is only a rough estimate, and what to do next.
